I think it looks really nice and elegant. It catches the eye and draws attention to the text, perfect for when you want some important text. Which I think the date would be.

Title banner | Text on an image
Ive come across a few websites where at the top of the page, on the home page is a banner of an image with title text in the middle of it, sometimes the image opacity is lower than normal so the text stands out more. I had the idea of having the date of my event on a background image of some sort. Whether it be a stage, a crowd of audience, some of the artists or so on. I think this clearly shows the most important thing anyone ever looks for when looking for information about an event, I know I always check for dates when I'm looking to book something.
