My target audience

Well considering my event is hosting hip-hop artists, its a good idea to do a bit of research on target audience of age/gender/location to people that listen to these artists, which will help me chose my design strategies knowing who briefly is going to be using the website.

Research

I came across a presentation which covered a lot of information about target audience of hip-hop listeners. It said:

"The primary demographic of Hip-Hop consists mostly of working class, African American males ranging from the ages of 11-36. Its success in the mainstream industry has widened the demographic significantly to suburban Caucasian adolescents and young adults in education, specifically from ages 11-25."

This is a description of the fashion my target audience wears.

I myself am a big fan of hip-hop and so are my friends and this is a spot on description of the fashion because it is what me and my friends where, we are all 20 years of age.

It may be argued that more black people than white listen to hip-hop but I know for a fact from having experience a hip-hop festival that it is quite balanced between black and white race. I learnt from the experience that its mostly young adults of around 18-25 that were there. Definitely more male but there was still a fair amount of girls, I would say 80-20 ratio.

A familiar logo in the media industry is this; a warning that in the lyrics it may contain content that is offensive or unsuitable for children.

A big question I needed to know was does this main I need age restriction in case it has a law?

This shows I do not have to abide a law, its the parents responsibility if they can go, but I have to take this as great importance as I can not be allowing anyone of any age to be allowed to go, I will have to have a date of birth validation when signing up, if they are too young then it will stop them from making an account, I think 16 is a suitable age for this.

Target Audience summarised

  • Age 16-25
  • Mainly Male, but suitable for females too.
  • African American fashion, skinny jeans, baggy t-shirts.
  • Stylish
  • Wealth
  • High class jewellery
  • Black race
  • Youth
